What this number counts
Adult mortality rate: the probability that a 15-year-old would die before reaching 60, expressed per 1,000, if subject to today’s age-specific death rates throughout.
The window is deliberately 15 to 60, which strips out both infant mortality and old age and leaves the working-age years.
What this number does not say
It is a probability for a synthetic cohort, not a count of deaths that happened.
It does not say from what. Causes differ sharply by sex in this age window, and this single rate collapses all of them together.
It excludes deaths before 15 and after 60, so it is not a measure of overall lifespan and should not be read as one.
The most recent value is an estimate subject to revision.
